The rise of smartphones and social media has reshaped the lives of young people, creating unprecedented challenges for their mental health and relationships. Drawing from Jonathan Haidt’s book The Anxious Generation and personal stories from my own experiences as an educator and parent of three children, this session explores the impact of mobile devices and social media on ourselves and our students. Participants will leave with practical strategies to support healthier technology habits, reduce anxiety, and foster meaningful connections in a digital world.

Phone Cases for Schools
Below are 2 companies that make cases for phones. There are other companies as well. I would recommend doing some research on these if you are going to adopt something like this.
  • Yondr - Brookings High School is using these
  • The Quiet Case

Wait Until 8th
This is a movement to get parents to delay getting their kids smartphones until the end of 8th grade. The website has information and resources.

Multitasking Resources
I encourage you to talk to your students/children about multitasking. These videos can be great starting places for a conversation.

  • Multitasking Myth Test (video)

Be Present App
I just started using this app. It looks like a great way to manage how much we use our phone.

Look Up Video #1 - we watched this one in the session
Look Up Video #2 - I recommend watching this one too!
