In this session, I'll share info on ways to use ChatGPT in the classroom. I'll help you think about ways to use ChatGPT as a "teaching assistant". In addition, I'll share a couple examples of how AI is being integrated into other ed tech tools such as Quizizz and Canva. We will also have
time for a discussion on what you're seeing in your schools regarding AI.

Resources:

  • Yucky!
Purchase a signed copy here or on Amazon.
The goal of this book is to help students realize that math isn't just about doing calculations.

  • Google Quick Draw
A fun tool that uses AI to identify what you're drawing. Can you get 6 out of 6?

  • ChatGPT
Here are several of the prompts I gave ChatGPT to create info for my presentation:
    • what is ai
    • what is chatgpt
    • short version of what chatgpt is
    • short version of what chatgpt is but make it sound like a high school kid said it
    • what is the difference between chatgpt 3.5 and 4.0 short explanation

  • OpenAI
    The company that created ChatGPT.

  • Teaching Ideas
There are so many sites that provide ideas for question prompts. Here are a few:
    • 50 Prompts - Teaching Channel
    • 50 Prompts - TeacherMade
    • 25 Prompts for Math Teachers - Class Tech Tips
    • 40 Prompts to Save You Time - Tech.co

  • Quizizz
This is a great tool for doing formative assessment and creating interactive lessons. They've integrated ChatGPT making it even more powerful.

  • Canva
Great tool for creating presentations, posters, marketing materials for your school. The ChatGPT tools have take this to the next level too.

  • Khanmigo
Khan Academy is using ChatGPT 4 to make their learning platform more robust.

  • Preventing ChatGPT Cheating
This is a challenge! I recommend doing these things. I've included some helpful articles below. This is a moving target so continue to research approaches to combat cheating.
    • Get to know your students - build strong relationships with them so you have an understanding of what they are capable of; work that doesn't align with what you learn about them might be a red flag that indicates cheating
    • Structure assessments in ways to prevent the use of ChatGPT - instead of summarizing a chapter, have them connect the chapter to their personal life or draw upon things specific to your class; check out this Google Search for more ideas.
    • Learn about detection tools - right now the tools aren't good at detecting content that has been generated by ChatGPT, but this may change. This Google Search has some ideas.
    • Teach students ethical use - this is important for all technology tools; we should be teaching students not to use images without permission, not to plagiarize, and not to use ChatGPT to do our work; this might be a challenge, but we should definitely be having conversations about being ethical and honest. Take a look at this Google Search for ideas.
